The #1 New Year's Resolution
The only New Year's resolution anyone needs is:
"I will be happy."
Resolve to be happy. Make that your number one priority and the rest is gravy.

What? Am I saying go out and party, smoke and eat crappy food?
Well, let's consider this for a moment.
What ARE the most common New Year's resolutions?
1. To lose weight.
2. To quite smoking.
3. To stop drinking and/or drugging.
4. To get fit.
5. To make more money.
It remains to be said that being fat, smoking, drinking, drugging and being out of shape results in some pretty unhappy feelings.
However:
- Getting thin will NOT make you happy, neither will gorging yourself on truffles.
- Quitting smoking won't make you happy, nor will smoking a pack of cigarettes a day.
- Giving up alchohol won't make you happy, neither will getting drunk and making a fool of yourself.
- Getting physically fit will not fill an emotional void - just like watching TV won't... you get my point.
Nothing can make you happy, other than becoming happy on the inside.
Once you feel comfortable with EXACTLY WHO YOU ARE - the good, the bad AND the ugly- the rest begins to take care of itself.
Being happy with yourself where you are right now, RIGHT NOW, will put you on the road to happiness.
If you're drinking too much and you're reading this blog, it's pretty much a given that you're not happy. (I am a therapist after all).
If you're eating to much and are out of shape - you know that you'd like to be in better physical condition.
If you're depressed, sad, lonely or just fed up, you're exactly where you need to be to begin your journey to happiness.
You know that you need help.
So what to do?
Take one step in the "happiness direction."
I believe we all have the capacity to live happy, productive lives.
It doesn't matter if your parents were horrible, or you were abused.
It doesn't matter if you're actively addicted to alchohol or drugs.
It doesn't matter if you're recently divorced or grieving the loss of a loved one.
If you're depressed, lonley, scared, out of control, fat, thin, smoke and drink - you can still be happy!
The first thing to do is recognize that you WANT help (would you be reading this if you didn't?)
