Depression

Major depression, also known as unipolar depression, is one of the more commonly encountered psychiatric disorders. Many effective treatments are available, however this disorder is often under-diagnosed and under-treated.

How do you know if you're depressed and need help?

The DSM-IV-TR diagnostic criteria for a major depressive episode are as follows:

At least 5 of the following, during the same 2-week period, representing a change from previous functioning:

  • Depressed mood
  • Diminished interest or pleasure
  • Significant weight loss or gain
  • Insomnia or hypersomnia
  • Psychomotor agitation or retardation
  • Fatigue or loss of energy
  • Feelings of worthlessness
  • Diminished ability to think or concentrate; indecisiveness
  • Recurrent thoughts of death, suicidal ideation, suicide attempt, or specific plan for suicide
